Baby Gift Works has put together the following list to help guide you in packing for your baby during their hospital stay.
1 Pack Newborn Nappies
Baby Wipes or Bag of Cotton Wool
5 Nightgowns or Growsuits
4 Singlets or Bodysuits
2 Newborn Hats
2 Pairs Mittens (if not built into growsuit) to protect from scratches
2 Pairs Booties or Socks
Going Home outfit (with spare in case the first is soiled before you leave) - Growsuit, cardigan (if cool outside), hat, mittens.
Outfit for newborn photography
2 Blankets (for the trip home if cool outside)
4 Muslin Wraps (ideal for newborn swaddling)
Burp Cloths (ideal for protecting your clothes from possetting and mopping up messes)
Remember to check with your hospital for any special requirements. This list will vary depending on how long you stay in hospital and where you live.
If it is 40 degrees outside and your car's air-conditioning isn't very efficient, a bodysuit and a muslin wrap will be enough for your trip home. If it is below zero, more layers will be required.
It can be helpful to have a variety of sized clothes available as every baby is different and pre-birth size estimates are not always accurate.
We prefer gowns for newborn dressing as they are the easiest to put on and off, change nappies in and to size. Unlike growsuits, gowns have a lot of room to move with baby's length and the wrists can be turned over if your baby ends up being small at birth.
